I think it was then that I had the first glimpse—how pain and beauty are all part of life. The cows, the rooster, the rolling hills, the people—all of it was just in this process of living. Everything had a place and was part of this thing happening. I felt this comfort, almost like feminine arms holding me, helping me understand Ruth’s words about gratitude. My mother always helped me relax as a child, when I was scared and pulled the covers up over my head at night. In this moment, the earth felt like that—a Divine Mother pulling the covers off of my head, encouraging me not to be afraid of the pain of this world and not be afraid of letting go of what used to be my true north. I knew I had been cautious with this retreat because it wasn’t centered on my given traditions, but the music, the language, the movement—I realized, really, I had been learning this my whole life, how to let go and open my heart. The music made my heart open, just like music had done all along. The words were different; the meaning was the same—open your heart, follow Love. We all come from different parts of the earth. The word for watermelon isn’t the same everywhere. Neither is the word for peace or for spirit or for anything else. How did I ever expect it to be? It’s all this practice that we do to open our hearts, recognize the divine. I thought this practice belonged to one specific group. My entire life I thought my line was the one true line holding all of the truth. But now I found myself with people of all religions, doing things I never thought I would, like crazy synchronized body movements and two-hour meditations—something the people on my dot would say is “opening your mind to Satan himself.” But instead of finding Satan waltzing in and taking over my limbic system, I found love, calming my frantic mind, centering my heart.
I felt it was okay for Michael and me to be on different pages. Life wasn’t about struggling to be on the same page but was about seeing the person. It was about seeing what was right in front of me in all of the cow poop and glorious light.
My body unfolded and unfurled as a bright tangerine glow made its way to my feet. And I know I was prepared for something that day—a fall, and a flip of the world that begins to turn everything right side up.
